Private Gerês Waterfalls and Mountain Viewpoints Tour from Porto

About this experience

Discover Portugal’s only national park on a private full-day tour from Porto through Gerês waterfalls, mountain viewpoints, highland culture and thermal villages.

With a licensed driver-guide and premium private vehicle, travel first to Fafião for cultural context at the Eco Museum of Barroso and the historic Wolves Fojo, where stone structures reveal how mountain communities once adapted to wildlife and survival.

Continue through the natural drama of Gerês with stops such as Tahiti Waterfall, Ermida Viewpoint, Rocas Viewpoint, Arado Waterfall and Pedra Bela Viewpoint, one of the park’s signature panoramas.

After flexible lunch time in Gerês village, enjoy a short thermal-village walk, continue to Portela do Homem Waterfall and, when timing allows, add a brief cross-border stop at Lobios in Spain.

Itinerary and highlights

Start the day with private pickup from your hotel or agreed meeting point in Porto. Travel comfortably in a premium private vehicle toward Peneda-Gerês National Park.

Transfer from Porto to Fafião

During the drive, your licensed driver-guide introduces the geography of northern Portugal, the creation of Peneda-Gerês National Park and the relationship between mountain landscapes, rural communities and water

Fafião and Eco Museum of Barroso

Begin in Fafião, one of the highland villages that helps explain the human dimension of Gerês. Visit or interpret the Eco Museum of Barroso, which introduces rural life, pastoral memory and adaptation to mountain conditions.

Fojo dos Lobos — Fafião

Stop at the Fojo dos Lobos, traditional stone wolf-trap structures that preserve the memory of historical coexistence between communities, livestock and wildlife. This is one of the most original cultural stops of the day.

Tahiti Waterfall / Fecha de Barjas

Visit Tahiti Waterfall, the popular name for the Cascades of Fecha de Barjas. The granite formations, cascades and clear pools create one of the most photogenic natural settings in Gerês.

Rocas Viewpoint

Continue to Rocas Viewpoint, which adds a different angle on the Gerês landscape. The changing light, depth and ridgelines create a complementary visual reading of the mountains.

Arado Waterfall

Visit Arado Waterfall, one of the best-known waterfall stops in Gerês. The descent of water through granite formations creates a fresh and sensory experience, with possible water access depending on conditions.

Pedra Bela Viewpoint

Stop at Pedra Bela Viewpoint, one of the defining panoramas of the national park. From this elevated viewpoint, admire mountain slopes, forest, valleys and the Caniçada reservoir.

Lunch and Free Time in Gerês Village

Lunch is intentionally flexible and not included in the base price. Guests may choose a relaxed local restaurant or a lighter option depending on preference, availability and pace.

Gerês Thermal Village Walk

Enjoy a short walk through Gerês Thermal Village, where the mountain experience shifts into a calmer rhythm. The village reflects the region’s identity as a historic thermal retreat associated with wellbeing, seasonal stays and spa traditions.

Portela do Homem Waterfall

Continue to Portela do Homem Waterfall, a classic Gerês water stop where forest, granite and clear mountain water create a vivid final nature highlight on the Portuguese side of the route.

Optional Lobios Thermal Area — Spain

When timing and conditions allow, continue briefly across the border to Lobios Thermal Area in Galicia, Spain. This optional extension adds a calm cross-border dimension to the day and shows how the wider Gerês-Xurés mountain landscape continues beyond Portugal.
