Itinerary and highlights

Start the day with private pickup from your hotel or agreed meeting point in Porto. Travel comfortably in a premium private vehicle toward Arouca Geopark.

Scenic Transfer from Porto to Serra da Freita

The drive gradually shifts from Porto toward mountain landscapes, preparing the day for viewpoints, geology, traditional villages and the Paiva Valley.

Begin with Frecha da Mizarela, one of Arouca Geopark’s signature sights and widely presented as the highest waterfall in mainland Portugal. From the viewpoint, admire the mountain amphitheatre, steep slopes and dramatic drop of the Caima River.

Visit the Casa das Pedras Parideiras, created to explain the rare geological phenomenon of the “birthing stones.” This compact interpretive stop gives scientific depth and context to the morning.

Stop at Panorâmica do Detrelo da Malhada, one of the great scenic balconies of Serra da Freita. At high altitude, the viewpoint offers wide perspectives over ridgelines, valleys and, on clear days, toward the sea.

Pause in Janarde, a traditional village that adds a human layer to the mountain landscapes. Granite houses, narrow lanes and the quiet presence of local heritage help show how communities adapted to altitude, stone and the Paiva Valley environment.

Continue to Meitriz, one of the most charming traditional villages in the Paiva Valley. Its riverside setting, agricultural terraces and calm atmosphere add an intimate and authentic perspective to the day.

Make a brief scenic stop in Cabril, used as a visual transition before the valley section. This pause closes the mountain-and-village chapter before descending toward the Paiva River.

At Areinho, enjoy a short and easy Paiva riverside walk designed for guests who want contact with the river landscape without a demanding hiking commitment. The river, vegetation and forested slopes give an immediate sense of being inside the landscape.

Cross the 516 Arouca Suspension Bridge, the defining visual and emotional moment of the day. Suspended above the Paiva Valley, the bridge reveals the scale of the river gorge step by step as guests advance across the span.

Lunch and Free Time in Alvarenga

Lunch is intentionally flexible and not included in the base price. Alvarenga is a natural and practical lunch stop after the bridge crossing, with time to rest, enjoy coffee or choose a regional meal.

The area is known for Arouquesa beef, often served as regional steak, while lighter and vegetarian options may be possible depending on the selected restaurant.

Scenic Transfer from Alvarenga to Arouca

After lunch, travel from Alvarenga to Arouca, closing the landscape chapter and preparing a calmer heritage finish.

Visit Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Arouca, one of the region’s most important heritage monuments. After the open-air landscapes of the morning, the monastery adds sacred heritage, architectural calm and historical depth to the end of the day.
