We passed the historic Maria Pia Bridge, Gustave Eiffel’s first major work in Porto (1877), looking elegant and beautifully lit up at night.

"The moment we’ve been waiting for. We cross the iconic, double-deck iron bridge.

"To the right, the Ribeira district (a UNESCO World Heritage site) with its vibrant lights; to the left, the famous Port Wine cellars.

Looking up at the top of the Gaia hill, the Serra do Pilar Monastery rises up illuminated. Down at the quay, traditional Rabelo boats line up next to the wine cellars.

A monumental bridge with a giant arch that was the largest in the world for decades. It is the gateway to the river's maritime zone."
