Itinerary and highlights

The monument popularly known as Cristo Rei, was inspired by Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon, Dom Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira on a visit to the statue of Christ the Redeemer, existing in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1934. Later, on April 20, 1940 , the Portuguese episcopate met in Fatima to ask God to deliver Portugal from participating in the Great World War that involved practically all of Europe, the President of the Council (Prime Minister) Salazar, did not want to violate the old friendship with the United Kingdom , which dates from the fourteenth century, and preferred to maintain neutrality, with Portugal not participating in that war. After the end of the war, the first stone of this building was laid on December 18, 1949, situated at an altitude of 133 meters above the Tagus level. The National Shrine of Christ the King was constituted by a portico designed by the architect António Lino. 75 meters high, topped by the statue of the Most Holy Redeemer with open arms facing the city of Lisbon, 28 meters high, the work of Portuguese sculptor Francisco Franco de Sousa. This monument offers the best view of the city of Lisbon and the 25 de Abril bridge.

Cape Espichel offers a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean and on a very clear day with few clouds you can see part of the great Lisbon and Cascais, it is worth visiting also the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Cabo, not only for its architectural beauty but mainly by the popular belief legends that surround the place and a little further away there is the Cape Espichel Lighthouse opened in 1790

Taken by D. Afonso Henriques in the 12th century, reconquered by the Arabs and recovered by the Christians under D. Sancho I, the Medieval Castle of Sesimbra completely surrounds the village and the bay of Sesimbra with its winding cliffs, which also offer great views. over the valley and coast of the area. Within the walls is the 18th century Santa Maria do Castelo Church with its white façade and inside a golden altar and exquisite tiles. The castle also has a park that is ideal for a picnic.

Situated by the sea, Arrábida Natural Park has a splendid beauty, where the blue of the sea alternates with the whitish tones of the limestone cliffs and the green of the dense vegetation that covers the mountain. Its plant richness is one of the park's main attractions, home to unique flora and fauna such as rare orchids, wild tulips and one of the rare examples of Mediterranean maquis in Portugal and its preservation was one of the reasons why Arrábida was considered a true international scientific relic.

Setúbal is a district and an integral city of the Lisbon region dating from the Roman era and a port of great historical and cultural importance. In Setúbal district you can find a little of everything from endless beaches of fine sand and crystal clear water, to fishermen's quarters where you can buy the freshest fish in the region directly, to lose sight of the pines that feed the economy of the region to the surrounding areas. with large commercial and industrial areas.
