About this experience

Discover Portugal’s highest mountain range on a private full-day tour from Porto to Serra da Estrela, a region of altitude, granite, cheese heritage, glacial landscapes and living pastoral culture.

With a licensed driver-guide and premium private vehicle, travel inland and shape the morning with one optional experience: a traditional cheesemaker visit with Serra da Estrela cheese tasting, a cheese heritage stop in Celorico da Beira, or a Dão wine estate visit at Quinta da Bica.

Continue through Seia, gateway to the mountains, then climb to Sabugueiro, one of Portugal’s best-known high-altitude villages.

Experience Lagoa Comprida, the summit area of Torre, flexible mountain lunch time, Vale do Rossim, Mondeguinho — source of the Mondego River — and Cabeça do Velho granite formation.

When timing and conditions allow, finish with Folgosinho and castle views before returning to Porto.

Transfer from Porto to Serra da Estrela Region

During the drive, your licensed driver-guide introduces central Portugal, Serra da Estrela Natural Park, pastoral culture, mountain food traditions and the logic of the gradual ascent.

Choose Your Morning Available Experience

Select one available morning experience after booking, subject to availability and official / partner confirmation. This gives the day a strong cultural or gastronomic opening before the higher mountain route.

Serra da Estrela Cheese Heritage — Celorico da Beira

If selected, enjoy a structured introduction to Serra da Estrela cheese as both a gastronomic product and a cultural marker of mountain life. This option is especially useful for guests who want interpretation, context and a clear food-heritage framework.

Traditional Cheesemaker Visit and Serra da Estrela Cheese Tasting

If selected, visit a traditional cheesemaker for a direct encounter with small-scale pastoral production. Learn how Serra da Estrela cheese is connected to ewe’s milk, thistle, salt, manual craft and mountain economy.

Dão Wine Estate — Quinta da Bica

If selected, visit Quinta da Bica, a Dão wine estate near Seia. This option adds a refined regional contrast, linking granite soils, altitude, inland climate and wine identity.

Seia — Gateway Town to the Mountains

Pause in Seia, one of the main gateways into Serra da Estrela. This stop provides contextual orientation before the route climbs into the higher mountain landscape.

Sabugueiro — High-Altitude Village

Visit Sabugueiro, one of Portugal’s best-known high-altitude villages. Enjoy a short walk through granite streets and observe mountain architecture, local commerce and village life adapted to altitude.

Granite houses, local products and seasonal rhythms reflect a way of life shaped by altitude. Here, visitors may find Serra da Estrela cheese, traditional cured meats, local handicrafts and the imposing Serra da Estrela Mountain Dog, historic guardian of flocks and people.

You will marvel at the surrounding traditions and natural surroundings of this ancient village and must try the famous Serra cheese.

You can visit the river beach, the Ethnographic Museum, water mills, the Parish Church of Sabugueiro, among other beautiful and unique views this town has to offer.

Lagoa Comprida — High Plateau Reservoir

Stop at Lagoa Comprida, the largest reservoir in Serra da Estrela. The landscape introduces the open scale, sparse vegetation and exposed character of the high plateau.

Torre — Highest Point in Mainland Portugal

Arrive at Torre, the symbolic summit of mainland Portugal at 1,993 metres. This is the emotional high point of the ascent and one of the most memorable geographic moments in the country.

Lunch and Free Time at Torre

Lunch is intentionally flexible and not included in the base price. Guests may choose a simple mountain meal, use the time for photos or enjoy free time in the summit area, depending on weather and conditions.

Vale do Rossim — Water, Pasture and Mountain Landscape

Continue to Vale do Rossim, a softer mountain landscape shaped by water, pasture and seasonal movement. This stop adds variety after the exposed summit area.

Mondeguinho — Source of the Mondego River

Visit Mondeguinho, the source of the Mondego River. This modest but meaningful stop links the high mountains with one of Portugal’s major river systems.

Cabeça do Velho — Granite Formation

Stop at Cabeça do Velho, a distinctive granite formation known for its profile resembling a human face. This adds folklore, geology and a lighter symbolic note to the afternoon.

Optional Folgosinho — Village and Castle Views

When timing and conditions allow, include a final stop at Folgosinho, a mountain village with historical texture and castle views. This stop adds a cultural ending before descent.
